Men and women worked together to found in 2010 the Blue Crab Bank, a Nature-based Solution (NbS), that bred and released egg-bearing crabs to restore the sea’s fertility. Women took central roles in this transition.

Only by fully recognizing and integrating Indigenous knowledge can Vietnam build an aquaculture sector that is ecologically sustainable, socially just, and resilient to future climate challenges.

For NbS to reach their full potential within aquaculture-dependent communities, women cannot be relegated to passive recipients of aid, nor can men be reduced to one-dimensional decision-makers. Both must be recognized as active agents and knowledge-holders, whose complementary perspectives are essential for building resilience.

Integrating Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) into inland cage aquaculture is essential to ensure that benefits are equitably shared and that the sector contributes to sustainable development as well as to economic growth.

Adopting a gender-inclusive approach to small-scale aquaculture is not only a matter of social equity but also a strategic imperative for advancing sustainability and resilience within the sector.
